Sustainability in logistics starts with making well-planned journeys, using resources carefully and being honest about what a service can and cannot achieve. Our focus is on practical improvements that support reliable delivery while reducing avoidable waste and inefficiency.

1. Our approach

Compass Cargo is committed to improving the way we plan and deliver transport. We consider the vehicle, route, load, access, timing and available transport mode together rather than making broad environmental promises that cannot be evidenced.

Our priorities are simple: reduce avoidable journeys, keep communication clear, use suitable equipment, support safe and efficient operations, and build long-term relationships with customers and responsible partners.

2. More efficient operations

Where practical, we look for improvements such as:

  • planning routes and delivery sequences to reduce unnecessary mileage and waiting;
  • matching the vehicle to the cargo so that capacity is used sensibly;
  • coordinating collections, deliveries and return journeys where schedules allow;
  • maintaining vehicles and addressing defects so they operate safely and efficiently;
  • avoiding unnecessary idling and encouraging sensible site practices; and
  • using digital documents and communication where this is secure, useful and accepted by the relevant parties.

These steps depend on the service required, cargo, customer timetable, traffic, carrier availability and legal or operational constraints. Efficiency measures do not change the need to select the safest and most suitable transport option.

3. Packaging and materials

Good packaging protects goods, reduces avoidable damage and can make loading space more efficient. We encourage customers and partners to consider fit-for-purpose packaging, reuse suitable materials, separate recyclable materials where facilities allow and avoid unnecessary packaging.

Packaging requirements vary by cargo and route. Customers remain responsible for ensuring goods are safely packaged, labelled and ready for the agreed service unless packaging support has been separately arranged.

4. People, safety and partners

Responsible logistics includes the people who plan, load, drive, handle and receive goods. Our sustainability approach therefore sits alongside fair communication, safe working practices and realistic scheduling. We expect carriers, agents, storage providers and other partners to follow applicable requirements and to raise operational concerns promptly.

We support long-term relationships because continuity helps teams understand routes, sites, cargo requirements and practical ways to avoid rework or unnecessary journeys.

5. Measurement and improvement

We are developing our ability to record useful operational information such as route planning, vehicle use, repeat delivery patterns, failed delivery reasons and avoidable waiting. As our data improves, we can identify realistic areas for action and explain the basis of any future figures.

We do not present an unverified whole-business carbon reduction, net-zero or zero-emission claim on this page. Any future target or environmental statement should be specific about what it covers, supported by appropriate evidence and reviewed as circumstances change.

6. Clear and responsible environmental claims

Environmental language should not give a wider or more positive impression than the evidence supports. If we describe a specific improvement, we will aim to explain what activity it relates to, the relevant conditions and the basis for the statement. Images, colours and general terms should also be considered so that the overall impression is not misleading.

Customers who need emissions information for a tender, shipment or reporting exercise should tell us what scope, route, mode, time period and calculation basis they require. We will confirm what information is available before a figure is used.

Sustainability is a continuing programme rather than a one-off promise. We will review this approach as our operations, data and available transport solutions develop.
